Why Should Your Company Pay for Managed DNS?

While you manage the registration of a domain at a domain registrar, it’s not always a great idea to manage where and how your domain resolves all of its other DNS entries to resolve your email, subdomains, host, etc. Your domain registrars’ primary business is selling domains, not ensuring that your domain can resolve quickly, managed easily, and has redundancy built-in.

What is DNS Management?

DNS Management are platforms that control Domain Name System server clusters. DNS data is typically deployed on multiple physical servers.

How does DNS Work?

Let’s provide examples of my own site configuration.

  • A user requests martech.zone in the browser. That request goes to a DNS server which provides the path to where that http request is maintained… in a name server. Then the name server is queried and my site’s host is provided using an A or CNAME record. Then the request is made to my site’s host and a path is provided back that’s resolved to the browser.
  • A user emails martech.zone in the browser. That request goes to a DNS server which provides the path to where that mail request is maintained… in a name server. Then the name server is queried and my email hosting provider is provided using a MX record. Then the email is sent to my email hosting company and routed properly to my inbox.

There are a few critical aspects of DNS Management that can make or break an organization that these platforms help you to resolve:

  1. Speed – The faster your DNS infrastructure, the faster the requests can be routed and resolved. Using a premium DNS management platform can help with user behavior and search engine visibility.
  2. Management – You may notice that when you update DNS on a domain registrar, you’ll get a standard response back that changes may take hours. A DNS Management platform changes are virtually in real-time. As a result, you can reduce any risk on your organization by having to wait for resolving updated DNS settings.
  3. Redundancy – What if the domain registrar’s DNS fails? While this isn’t commonplace, it has happened with some global DNS attacks. Most DNS management platforms have redundant DNS failover capabilities which can keep your mission-critical operations up and running in the event of an outage.

ClouDNS: Fast, Free, Secure DNS Hosting

ClouDNS is a leader in this industry, providing fast and secure DNS Hosting. They offer a ton of DNS services that start with a free DNS hosting account all the way through private DNS servers for your organization:

  • Dynamic DNS – Dynamic DNS is a DNS service, which provides the option to change the IP address of one or multiple DNS records automatically when the IP address of your device is changed dynamically by the internet provider.
  • Secondary DNS – The Secondary DNS provides a way to distribute the DNS traffic for a domain name to two or more DNS providers for the best possible uptime and redundancy in a very easy and friendly way. You can manage the DNS records of the domain name only at a single (Primary DNS) provider and the second provider using the Secondary DNS technology can be kept up to date and synchronized automatically.
  • Reverse DNS – Reverse DNS service provided by ClouDNS is a Premium DNS service for IP network owners and operators and it is not included in the Free plan. The Reverse DNS hosting is a business class service and supports both IPv4 and IPv6 Reverse DNS zones.
  • DNSSEC – DNSSEC is a feature of the Domain Name System (DNS) that authenticates responses to domain name lookups. It prevents attackers from manipulating or poisoning the responses to DNS requests. DNS technology was not designed with security in mind. One example of an attack on DNS infrastructure is DNS spoofing. In which case an attacker hijacks a DNS resolver’s cache, causing users who visit a website to receive an incorrect IP address and view the attacker’s malicious site instead of the one they intended.
  • DNS Failover – Free DNS Failover service from ClouDNS that keeps your sites and web services online in the event of a system or network outages. With DNS Failover you can also migrate traffic between redundant network connections.
  • Managed DNS – Managed DNS is a service fully managed by a professional DNS hosting company. A Managed DNS Provider allows users to manage their DNS traffic by using a web-based control panel.
  • Anycast DNS – Anycast DNS is a simple concept – you can reach a single destination following many different roads. Instead of having all the traffic go down one route, Anycast DNS utilizes multiple locations that receive queries to the network, but in different geographical locations. The objective here is for the network to find the shortest path for a user to a particular DNS server.
  • Enterprise DNS – ClouDNS’ Enterprise DNS network is designed to process millions of queries each second. Their pricing model is not based on query billing. You will be never billed for your peaks and your domain names will never stop working, because of DNS query limits. You will not be billed for any type of DNS query floods.
  • SSL Certificates – SSL Certificates protect your customer’s personal data including passwords, credit cards, and identity information. Getting an SSL certificate is the easiest way to increase your customer’s confidence in your online business.
  • Private DNS servers – Private DNS servers are fully white-label DNS servers. When you get a Private DNS server, it will be linked with their network and web interface. The Server will be managed and supported by their system administrators and you will be able to manage all your domains via the ClouDNS web interface.

ClouDNS is a Managed DNS provider since 2010. Their mission is to provide the best DNS services on the planet. They are constantly upgrading and expanding their network to exceed industry standards and bring customers the highest ROI. Their Anycast DNS infrastructure includes 29 different data centers located in 19 countries on 6 continents.

There aren’t too many times that you can both save money and increase the redundancy, speed and reliability of your online properties – but that’s exactly what we did. Just do a search of DNS outage and see how many companies have had issues with their DNS reliability.
